HomePort
A Housing Community for Seniors and Essential Workers on Deer Isle
The housing shortage on Deer Isle is well known. At HomePort, we’ve addressed this by transforming a former nursing home into 23 unique, carefully designed apartments for seniors (55 and older) and essential workers – two groups vital to the vibrancy and sustainability of the greater Deer Isle community. This repurposing of a former medical care facility into housing is unique in Maine.
In addition to the 23 apartments, the property includes spacious common areas and gathering spaces, a laundromat, and garden and patio areas available to residents. Office spaces are also available for commercial use. The building infrastructure has been extensively upgraded to current standards and for operational efficiency.
We constructed the apartments for approximately $90,000 per apartment, well below the usual cost for new construction, which can be $200,000 per unit or more. By carefully managing construction costs, along with generous financial support from members of the Deer Isle-Stonington and Blue Hill Peninsula communities, it has been possible to keep monthly rents affordable.
The renovation is expected to be completed in the fall of 2026.
We Need Your Help
Join us in creating urgently needed housing for the Deer Isle-Stonington community.
HomePort is proud to be a nonprofit in Maine tackling the affordable housing crisis by repurposing existing infrastructure in this way — and we can’t do it alone. We’ve launched a $1.5 million capital campaign to bring this innovative residential community to life. By supporting HomePort, you’re helping build a future where, together, seniors and essential workers will enjoy a sense of home in a beautiful community environment.

Who Needs Housing?
Seniors:
Our goal is to develop housing for island residents 55 and older who no longer wish to stay in their current home due to challenges with affordability, keeping up required maintenance, or social isolation. Seniors who have or are eligible for housing rental assistance will be welcome.
Essential Workers:
For younger individuals working on Deer Isle or the peninsula, housing is not affordable or available. HomePort will provide to businesses, schools, nonprofits, and medical care providers a place for their employees to live.
